Construction Site Cake

Posted on

Tayne had his 5th birthday party yesterday- what?! I can’t believe he’s 5!! He’s really into construction right now and our gift for him this year is a big gravel pit in the back yard with some Tonka Trucks to dig and play, so it seemed fitting to have a construction themed party.

I got the idea for the cake from a Google images search of “Construction Site Cake”. I know there are probably several people who have already blogged about it, but I’m going to add mine to the mix! It was the easiest “wow” cake ever!

What you’ll need:

1 Box Chocolate Cake Mix (plus eggs, oil, and water according to directions)

1 Box Instant Chocolate Pudding

1 Jar Chocolate Frosting

1 Sleeve Oreo Cookies

½ – ¾ Cup Brown Sugar

1 Box Whoppers

1 Package Chocolate Rocks

1 Package Small Construction Vehicles

I made the cake the day before the party to save on time:

Combine cake mix, eggs, oil, water, and pudding mix (this makes it extra moist) and bake according to package directions.

The next day (party day) I assembled the cake:

Stack cakes with a layer of frosting between. Decide where the “construction zone” will be and scoop out the cake with a spoon- don’t make it too pretty, it’s supposed to look messy. Frost the top (not the “construction zone”) and set aside.

Remove the cream filling from one sleeve of Oreo cookies (feel free to eat the leftover cream filling as you certainly won’t want it to go to waste) and crush the cookies in blender/food processor to form crumbs. Add brown sugar and mix well (be sure the brown sugar isn’t clumpy). Crumble the cake you removed for the “construction zone” and add it to the mix as well, combining thoroughly.

Now the fun begins. Decide where you want the various construction vehicles- I wanted at least two of them to be working in the “construction zone”. The other three I just set around for fun. Pile up your “dirt” in various places (including the dump truck), along the back of the cake, scattered around the base, etc. Add in a few “boulders” (Whoppers) here and there and finish with chocolate rocks scattered about and stacked in places for the finishing touch.

This cake took 30 minutes to decorate (in addition to bake time) and fed our party of 16 people with a few leftovers!

Tayne was speechless for a few minutes when he saw the cake (if you knew him, you’d realize how impressive that is)! He was so excited to show everyone his construction site cake, but even more excited to eat it! He was very particular about which piece of cake he got, as he needed to make sure he got to taste everything (cake, frosting, dirt, boulders, and rocks). If you’re looking for a quick and easy cake to impress your kids and guests, this is it!! Good luck!

That’s awesome. Did you have trouble serving guests?

[…] you just imagine a brown sugar topping for the sand?! How cute would that be?! It reminds me of the construction cake we made for Banayner’s birthday a couple of years ago… so fun and the easiest cake […]
